 NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

NYC Federal Stimulus to Benefit Infrastructure in All Five Boroughs

$261 million of federal transportation funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will benefit infrastructure projects throughout the City. These projects range from the rehabilitation of the Brooklyn Bridge to upgrades to the Ward’s Island Pedestrian Bridge and the replacement of protective coating on two Bruckner Expressway bridges. The City’s five-borough economic plan centers around making investments in neighborhoods that will continue to create jobs long after construction is completed. All federal stimulus funding allocated to NYC can be closely tracked at www.nyc.gov.

New Initiatives to Help Nonprofits in NYC

NYC nonprofits have been experiencing severe cash flow challenges and steep declines due to the economic downturn. In response, the City is implementing new initiatives that will help strengthen non-profits. These include reducing fixed costs, expanding loan programs, enhancing the responsiveness and efficiency of City contracting procedures to expedite payments, and building new partnerships.

Introducing the Coney Island Amusement Advisory Panel

A group of leading amusement industry experts will help structure and expedite the City’s plans for interim amusements at Coney Island in Summer 2010. The panel will also assist the City in continued planning efforts for a permanent amusement operation and development of a 27-acre amusement and entertainment district at Coney Island.

MillionTreesNYC Campaign Helps Green Jobs Grow

A $2 million federal grant will help create full-time jobs preserving or restoring parks and other green areas of New York City for graduates of the MillionTreesNYC training program. Up to 20 new jobs in horticulture and forestry will be created over the next two years for graduates of the MillionTreesNYC training program. The graduates will receive full-time employment, and restore the natural environment of neighborhoods, parks, gardens, wetlands and forest areas in the five boroughs.
